October is just about my favorite time of the year. The weather is cool, the trees are beautiful and the students are trained in classroom routines and settled down for lots of learning.
In our class right now we have finished up our unit on energy by making s'mores with Ms. Duncan. We are beginning a unit on the moon and its relationship to the earth and sun. We will be moon watching and reviewing the phases of the moon. Don't be surprised to hear your student talking about a waxing gibbous or a waning crescent.
We are really working hard to master place value. We are learning about big numbers with place values in the ten thousands. Next we move on to rounding.
As always we are reading and spelling and growing by leaps and bounds. We're excited about all the fun games and art projects associated with time of the year as well.

We're Really In The Swing of Things Now!
We've made it through the first couple of weeks of third grade now and things are beginning to run smoothly. We have adjusted to new teaching and learning styles as well as new schedules and routines. I am excited by the learning that I see happening everyday.
We have just finished up a math unit on graphing and are beginning work on place value. Your student will be working with much bigger numbers, and learning to round to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000.
Ms. Duncan is teaching the class all about energy, including light energy and heat energy. We have learned some big vocabulary words including transparent, translucent and opaque. Your student should be able to tell you what energy is.
We've started learning cursive and the students are doing so well and really working hard. Ask them to show you what they've learned, but I caution you on teaching them new letters as your cursive may be different from what I will teach them. Tell them to be patient and learn to write their letters the correct way. Thanks!
We are reading everyday and sorting and learning new vocabulary.
Here are this week's words. 1 .slosh 2. frayed 3. overcast 4. mammoth 5. furious 6. assist 7. task 8. lurk 9. orbit 10. bothersome
In my next post I will be explaining the 20 Book Challenge. Ask your student to tell you what they know about this cool new third grade program.

First Day of School!
It was an amazing first day of school! The kids were all so excited just like I was. The day started off on the right foot with a school wide flag ceremony. The pledge of allegience always sounds so much more meaningful coming from children. The day went by so quickly and was filled with learning routines and procedures. We had a lot of fun putting together puzzles in small groups and learning the value of cooperation. It was enlightening to see how each group went about solving their puzzle. All in all it was a fantastic first day. It is fun to anticipate all the fun we will have on this year long learning adventure. A BIG welcome to our student teacher Ms. Duncan. She is such a wonderful addition to our class. HAPPY SCHOOL YEAR EVERYONE!
